Prayer and Meditation at Home or Away

At a very busy time in my life busy with raising children in a busy family, I found myself sometimes sitting in a comfortable chair with the hymnbook. I would use the words as my prayers as I sang. I mentioned this to my mother once, and she brightened up and said, "Mom, used to do that very same thing when I was growing up." This created a sort of bond with Grandma Burry that I didn't know about before, even though she wasn't with us anymore.

The classic hymns and contemporary worship music accompaniments at HymnServe are soooo helpful for personal meditation. Some of us are used to having well-loved hymns and praise songs playing in the background while praying. We may be reminded of a certain song that was inspired to us personally at a significant trial or crossroad in our lives. It will always and forever be there to remind us of a loving heavenly Father's help to us individually.

During your personal devotions, it is always good to start with praise before you begin your long list of askings. This is when I might go to my piano and sing a praise song to put my mind in a 'right place' for prayer. Many, many times I find my way into the Lord's presence this way.

Others find that at bedtime or on a sleepless night, playing the favorite hymn accompaniments might be the very thing to lull one off to sleep, a kind of sleep therapy. If the hymn is familiar, the words will be running along through the mind, giving comfort, uplift, and healing after the tension of the day.

Would you like your children to know the great hymns of Christendom and today's wonderful contemporary songs? What an easy way to do this with the accompaniments you can turn on at home and sing along with anytime. They will learn them automatically from hearing you sing along with music. In my mind I can hear Grandma Burry singing as she worked around the house. Her favorite song would be heard:

Ere you left your room this morning, Did you think to pray?
In the name of Christ our Savior,
As a shield today?

Oh, how praying rests the weary.
Prayer can change the night to day
When the way seems rough and dreary
Did you think to pray?

Many people are used to hearing music as they gather for a service. It does quiet the spirit and calm the soul allowing one to forget the cares of the week, the pressures of life, and to turn towards God. Here is a note from a person suggesting the use of HymnServe accompaniments both at home and as gathering music before a church service.

I've enjoyed listening to them while doing the dishes. I pointed out to my Church Music Director husband that the "You are my Hiding Place" version on the CD sounded a bit Latin (Latino) and that we could probably add guitar or other instrumentals to it to make it even more so, which would be a lovely addition to our worship music at church. I like the light, traditional feel to these praise songs and will use them as gathering music at our traditional service. They are a bit too light for our praise service, but I ordered it specifically for our traditional worship service (during the preservice gathering time).
