Two times I have been a sales associate for keyboard companies, one in Richmond, VA, and one in Anchorage, AK. One customer in Anchorage always came in to the showroom when the new Yamaha digital piano models came out. She would purchase the top of the line for her church in a little town to the north. The manager asked me to record some hymns for her on the floppy disc so the congregation could sing with it on Sunday. It turned out to be a fun project for me, the customer paid me very well, and she also was happy to sit at the piano at church and play along and supplement what I recorded earlier.

So it became a weekly event. The customer would phone me with the hymns they would sing the following Sunday, and I would record them when there were no customers in the showroom and she would pick up the disk at the end of the week.

As musicians know, there can be overwhelming numbers of calls from churches needing substitutes. Sometimes I go the extra mile for a church that I badly needs someone on a particular Sunday when maybe the bishop is coming or some similar circumstance. I am always sorry for the churches that end up not having anyone to accompany the hymns. Imagine how hard it must be to carry on.

When I saw how this new method of accompanying hymns worked and knowing I am only one person and can help one church at a time, I had a deep desire to make accompaniments available for situations when it isn’t easy to find the musician needed.
