How HymnServe Began

Founder Elaine Johnson and the Idea for HymnServe

The idea for HymnServe came to Elaine Johnson when she was a sales associate for a keyboard company in Anchorage, Alaska. One particular customer would come in the showroom when the new Yamaha digital piano models came out and would buy one to use at her church. Since the parishioner had a modest command at the piano, the manager asked Mrs. Johnson to record some hymns onto a floppy disc for her. This was so the congregation had specific worship music they could sing along with on Sunday. This became a weekly event and a fun project for Mrs. Johnson. So every week the customer would call the store with a list of hymns and praise and worship Christian music the following Sunday and Mrs. Johnson would record them in the showroom. The customer would then pick up the disk at the end of the week for the church to sing along to.

From this experience, Mrs. Johnson saw this as a way to help a variety of churches in need of musical accompaniment. If a pianist is out for the service and a replacement is needed quickly, the praise and worship music from HymnServe can be a great substitute.
